Hexipedia explores superstitions, folklore and cultural taboos through the records and sources available for each topic. A belief can vary by place, period, family and community; one example should not stand for an entire culture.

What you will find here

Articles examine the history, context and everyday meaning of particular beliefs and customs. Some questions have well-documented answers. Others have competing explanations or little surviving evidence. We aim to distinguish those cases instead of presenting an uncertain origin as settled fact.

You can browse the latest articles or explore topics such as food taboos, lucky numbers and colors in East Asia, and the meaning of knocking on wood.

Sources and corrections

For new and revised articles, we aim to link relevant historical records, cultural institutions, official guidance or research that supports the specific claim. A source may document one place, period or community without representing everyone who shares a national or religious label. When evidence is limited, an article should explain what remains uncertain.

Older pages are still being reviewed, so not every article may yet reflect this approach. If you spot an unsupported claim, outdated detail or missing context, please contact us with the article URL and the passage you would like us to check.
